Losing one’s wig-hat while ditching the Po-Po

Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share a virtual kitchen table with other readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by to talk about music, your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper…. Newcomers may notice that many who post in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table and hope to make some new friends as well.

In a country with decent vehicle registration agencies, can you ever really outrun law enforcement. More police officers die in traffic accidents than in shootings. But that’s not as sexy as the fight/flight adrenalin rush of real or imagined police chases for all involved. More unfortunate are the media resources dedicated to helicopter video coverage of such chases.

Apparently some version of a video game was to be adapted for an upcoming television series but that may actually be AMC ‘s remake of a British drama series. Because there are multiple movies with the same name and isn’t real life supposed to be more/less boring. And no one walks in LA, as the song goes. And crumbs will get into your wig-hat if you eat in the car.

Very few laws specifically control police pursuits. Instead, police department policies dictate pursuit restrictions. Legally, police officers have a right to pursue. Even if they fail to follow department policy, they probably won’t have broken any laws, but they might suffer consequences within the police force. The American common law rule is sovereign immunity — that is, government officials and institutions are not liable for any damages that occur while they are in the course of their government duties, no matter how negligent their actions.

Then there’s the endless media cross-overs. Eventually I found the latest version of The Driver which doesn’t at all resemble a video game and setting it in Louisiana is less than satisfying.

“AMC Networks today announced that it had greenlit a new dramatic series for 2023 starring Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul), The Driver. Produced by AMC Studios, in association with A+E Studios and Thruline Entertainment, The Driver will have a six-episode first season and premiere next year on AMC+ and AMC. The six-episode first season is based on a U.K. format created by Danny Brocklehurst and Jim Poyser. Brocklehurst and Sunu Gonera developed the new series for U.S. television. It focuses on a taxi driver (Esposito) whose life is turned upside down when he agrees to chauffer a New Orleans-based Zimbabwean gangster notorious for exploiting undocumented immigrants at the U.S. southern ports. The show is slated to debut on AMC and AMC Plus in 2023.

(2021) In a move that surely nobody saw coming, the Driver series of video games—a series that hasn’t seen a major release since 2011 and is, by my calculation, the 13th most relevant car game franchise out there—is getting its own live-action TV adaptation, publisher Ubisoft announced on Tuesday. Set to stream exclusively on Binge, an upcoming, gaming-focused streaming service, the Driver TV series will tell the tale of “John Tanner, an ex-racecar driver turned undercover agent whose mission is to take down the local crime syndicate.”

So, essentially, the plot of the first Fast & Furious movie.

Fun fact: the original Driver video game from 1999 was inspired by ’70s car chase movies and TV shows, so having the game spawn its own show that will presumably be filled with car chases is either, depending on how you look at things, a cool full-circle moment for the game franchise’s creators or a slightly hilarious indictment on the entertainment industry’s lack of creativity worthy of a Bojack Horseman subplot.

The fifth installment in the Driver: San Francisco series, this 2012 game sees players exploring a fictional version of San Francisco while solving missions in a collection of swanky real-world cars. The title allows players to switch to any car mid-mission without having to start over. Since you’re controlling a cop, the game is all about catching the bad guys–but the game also includes an impressive cops and robbers split-screen mode.

A hair-raising pursuit ends with a driver ramming several police SUVs, running across a freeway and losing their wig while fleeing from officers.

The La Habra Police Department later identified the driver as 26-year-old Los Angeles resident, Niqwayzh Green. At the time of the pursuit, Green was on parole for burglary.

A man in a golf cart with a dog led officers with the Los Angeles Police Department on a brief pursuit in the San Fernando Valley Sunday night.

The pursuit began at around 9:10 p.m. with a suspect whom police say is wanted for assault with a deadly weapon. At some point, the suspect took off in the golf cart, prompting the chase to begin.

With SkyCal overhead, officers could be seen throwing multiple unsuccessful spike strips towards the cart, which said “security” on the side.

The male suspect also had a dog in his lap as he continued to flee.

At around 9:45 p.m., the suspect pulled into a parking lot but was quickly cornered by officers on foot.

The suspect, shirtless and shoeless, began to run but was quickly apprehended by nearly two dozen officers near Oxnard Street and Laurel Canyon Boulevard.

Consider this: the National Highway Traffic Administration conducted a study that found eating to be a greater distraction while driving than cell phone use. While almost half of drivers surveyed consider eating and drinking while driving to be a distraction, almost all are guilty.

EATING WHILE DRIVING

While eating, a driver’s reaction speed is lowered by 44% and while drinking, a driver’s reaction speed is lowered by 22%.

Multitasking is hard enough on its own, but eating while driving is in a whole different league. A sticky league. A crumbly league. Lucky for you, backseat driver and columnist Alex Beggs has answers to all of your questions about food in the car (and there were a lot of them).

Uber and other ride-sharing apps frown upon eating while riding. But I get really hungry. —Chewing Chaitanya

If you can’t work up the nerve to ask, no snackin’ in the cab. I once asked my Lyft driver, Myles (no joke), whether I could eat in his car and the next thing I knew, he was divulging one of his darkest secrets: a curiosity for the taste of human flesh. Suddenly, the RxBar I was eating was even harder to swallow than usual. Avoid messy foods as a rule.
